An NDPI file is a digital slide image created by Hamamatsu slide scanners, such as the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer. It stores an image of a pathology slide specimen saved in a proprietary, TIFF-like format. The format is actively used in medical and research settings for analyzing slide specimens virtually.

Pathologists employ virtual microscopes and digital slide scanners to digitize and examine pathology specimens. Hamamatsu slide scanners export slide images as NDPI files, which include embedded JPEG images and accompanying metadata that provide information regarding image size, resolution, and other details.
Despite resembling the TIFF format, NDPI files have a unique structure that prevents them from being read as standard TIFF files. Their headers differ from typical TIFF headers, causing applications that support TIFF files to potentially fail when opening NDPI files. Only specialized slide-viewing applications can open and display NDPI files successfully.
