How to use item check boxes in Windows 10

Step-by-step instructions

Windows 10 provides item checkboxes that help you to select multiple items (such as files and folders) at one time. This allows you to move, copy, and delete multiple items simultaneously. Item checkboxes are especially helpful on devices without a keyboard (such as tablets), where you can't hold Control or Shift to select multiple items at once.

Activating item checkboxes

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click View in the menu bar to display the ribbon at the top of the window.
  3. Check the box next to "Item check boxes."

Deactivating item checkboxes

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click View in the menu bar to display the ribbon at the top of the window.
  3. Uncheck the box next to "Item check boxes."
