How to show file extensions in macOS

Step-by-step instructions

To show file extensions in macOS:

  1. Click the Finder icon.
  2. Select Finder → Settings....
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Select the Show all filename extensions checkbox.

macOS now shows your files' extensions.

NOTE: If you want to hide extensions again, clear the Show all filename extensions checkbox.
