How to search by file extension in macOS

Step-by-step instructions

macOS allows you to search for files on your computer by file extension through its Finder program. For example, you can search for all the Microsoft Word documents with the ".docx" file extension on your computer. To do this:

  1. In Finder, select File → Find (or press Command + F).
  2. Select "Other..." from the dropdown menu (instead of "Kind").
  3. Type "extension."
  4. Select "File extension" and click OK.
  5. Choose "File extension" from the dropdown menu.
  6. Type the extension.

macOS displays a list of files with the file extension you entered in Finder.
