Software Overview
ScummVM is a virtual machine used to run a variety of discontinued computer games. It is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. The application is also ported to game consoles, such as Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, and PlayStation 2.
The program was originally developed to only play point-and-click adventure games based on the Script Creation Utilitiy for Maniac Mansion (SCUMM) system but its support has since been extended to non-SCUMM games. It can play games from a variety of developers, including LucasArts, Humongous Entertainment, Coktel Vision, Revolution Software, and Westwood. The application functions similar to an .EXE file, which enables games to be played on platforms it was not intended for, but still requires you to load the original game data files. When playing the games, ScummVM features a simple, customizable user interface that allows you to set the graphics, audio, and volume of the game.
If you are looking for a program other than ScummVM to play classic point-and-click adventure games, you will most likely come up empty-handed. ScummVM is your best option to play classic SCUMM-based games that are no longer developed.
