Periodically, Microsoft released Service Pack updates for Windows XP. These CDs contained data used to fix issues with and add features to the operating system. Microsoft released Windows XP Service Pack 1 on September 9, 2002, for both Windows XP Professional Edition and Home Edition.
Along with files and folders containing update data, each Service Pack 1 CD contained an SP1 file. Windows used the presence of this file to verify that it should install the Service Pack. SP1 files themselves contain no data or information.
