A GMA file is an add-on for Garry's Mod, a physics sandbox game. It is used to modify the game's gameplay. For example, a GMA file may alter a character or item's appearance, add a new game map, or add a new game mode.

Primarily, Garry's Mod players download GMA files via Steam Workshop. In Windows, Steam Workshop automatically places GMA files in the following directory:
~/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/GarrysMod/garrysmod/addons
This allows Garry's Mod to load an apply the add-on the GMA file contains. Players can also manually create GMA files. If they do, they must also manually place the file in Garry's Mod's addons directory.

To use a GMA file with Garry's Mod, place the file in the game's addons directory. In Windows, the addons directory is typically located at:
~/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/GarrysMod/garrysmod/addons
If you want to view a GMA file's contents, you can so do by opening the file with Crowbar or Garry's Mod Publish Tool. You can also use Crowbar and Garry's Mod Publish Tool to create GMA files.
