APKPure introduced the XAPK format to simplify the distribution of Android apps that require files in addition to the APK. Instead of downloading an APK and its accompanying data files separately, users can download a single XAPK file that contains everything needed to install the app. This approach is especially useful for large apps and games that include extensive graphics, audio, or other assets.

Historically, Android apps distributed through Google Play could use OBB expansion files to store large assets separately from the APK file. This approach became common because older Google Play APK size limits restricted how much content developers could include directly in an app package. Modern Google Play apps typically use Android App Bundles (.AAB) with Play Asset Delivery instead of OBB expansion files, but XAPK files remain useful for distributing APK-based apps and their associated resources outside of Google Play.

注: APKPure-style XAPK files contain a manifest.json file along with the APK file and any associated data files. The manifest stores metadata about the app, such as its package name, version, and included files, which XAPK installers use to extract the archive and install the app correctly on an Android device.

Since XAPK files are not standard Android installation packages, you must install them manually or use an XAPK-compatible installer. For example, after downloading an XAPK file, you can install it on an Android device using an installer, such as APKPure, which extracts the package contents and installs the APK file along with any required app data. You can also install the app (the APK file stored in the package) to an Android device using the TarrySoft XAPK or Lean StartApp SAI+: APK Installer & XAPK installers.

You can also open an XAPK file manually since it uses Zip-based compression. To view its contents, rename the .xapk extension to .zip or open the file directly with a Zip utility, such as Microsoft Windows File Explorer, Apple Archive Utility, or RARLAB WinRAR. After extracting the contents, advanced users can install the APK and place any included data files in the required locations on the Android device.
