A CK2 file is a saved game created by Crusader Kings II, a strategy game published by Paradox Interactive. It contains a record of a player's progress in a Crusader Kings II game. In most cases, CK2 files are plain text files that can be opened and edited in any text editor. In Crusader Kings II, players control a medieval dynasty during the years 1066 to 1453. As the game progresses, players attempt to earn prestige and continue their dynasty for as long as possible.
Crusader Kings II saves players' game progress in CK2 files. When a player manually saves their game, they can choose whether to create a compressed or uncompressed CK2 file. (Each compressed CK2 file contains both a plain text CK2 file and an accompanying meta metadata file.) Autosaves and quick saves are never compressed.

You can open and edit plain text CK2 files with Microsoft Notepad, Apple TextEdit, or any other text editor. If your CK2 file is Zip-compressed, you must decompress it (with Apple Archive Utility, 7-Zip, or another Zip-decompression tool) to access the plain text CK2 file it contains. Then, you can open and edit the plain text CK2 file.
How to use CK2 files with Crusader Kings II
To use a CK2 file with Crusader Kings II, place it in the game's save games directory. This directory is usually located at:
