An AW file is an audio file used by a Nintendo GameCube or Wii video game. It contains in-game sound effects or music. AW files are most notably used in Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

The AW file format is one of many proprietary file formats Nintendo uses to store in-game audio. While the AW format was mostly used in GameCube games, the Wii's Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 both also use AW format soundbanks.
Most players will never encounter AW files. However, some Nintendo enthusiasts have extracted AW files from their GameCube and Wii video games and created utilities that allow them to play the audio the files contain.

You can use AW Extractor (Windows) to extract the audio that Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 AW files contain. AW Extractor transforms Super Mario Galaxy's AW files to .WAV files, which can be played in most popular media players. AW Extractor is not meant to be used with other games' AW files.
