An FF file is an image saved in the farbfeld image format. It contains an uncompressed image that can be compressed using a variety of image compression formats. FF files are most commonly compressed using bzip2 compression, after which they are saved with the ff.bz2 extension.

In 2016, Suckless.org debuted farbfeld, a new image file format that "is easy to parse, pipe, and compress." Farbfeld is a loseless format that, unlike the .JPG and .PNG formats, is not tied to a specific kind of image compression. Rather, farbfeld images, which are saved as FF files, can be compressed using a variety of compression algorithms. However, farbfeld's developers suggest that FF file users compress farbfeld images using bzip2 compression (turning the files into .BZ2 files).
Because most popular software applications already use and support the JPG and PNG formats, and because compressing and decompressing FF files using bzip2 or another compression algorithm is less convenient than simply saving images as JPG or PNG files, the FF image format never took off. However, Linux users can still download a number of tools that allow them to create and convert FF images from Suckless.org.
