An MSBT file contains information about how text is displayed in various games for several Nintendo consoles, such as 3DS, Switch, Wii, and Wii U. It stores information about dialogs that appear during the game, such as the actual text, the appearance of the dialog, the character attributed with the dialog, and when the dialog appears.

MSBT files are created by Message Studio, an internal tool used by Nintendo developers to generate dialog text for games. The dialog text does not only appear when characters are speaking, but it may also appear to give characters options for in-game decisions or when a player chooses to save the game.
