What is a YY file?
A YY file is a metadata file created by YoYo Games GameMaker Studio 2 (also known as GameMaker). It contains JSON-format data associated with a GamerMaker Studio 2 resource, such as a sprite, font, or script. GameMaker Studio 2 automatically creates a corresponding YY file when a developer creates or imports a resource.
More Information
GameMaker Studio 2 is a multiplatform game engine developed by YoYo Games. It allows developers to create 2D video games, using drag-and-drop programming and a scripting language known as GameMaker Language.
When a developer creates a new resource in GameMaker Studio 2, the program creates a corresponding YY file. This file contains metadata that GameMaker Studio 2 uses to identify and load the resource correctly. YY files are typically stored in the same folder as the resource with which they are associated.
NOTE: Many YY files are paired with .GML files, which contain scripts written in GameMaker Language.
How to open a YY file
YY files are not meant to be opened. However, if you want to view the JSON data a YY file contains, you can open it in Microsoft Visual Studio Code (multiplatform) or any other text or source code editor.
