What is an XMCD file?
An XMCD file is a Mathcad Worksheet used by Mathcad, an engineering calculation software developed by Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC). It contains both mathematical and textual elements, including equations, graphs, and tables, allowing users to perform, document, and share engineering calculations. XMCD files are XML-based, making them readable and structured for data sharing and integration with other tools.
More Information
Users typically find XMCD files in engineering and scientific environments where Mathcad is used for performing and validating calculations. Users, such as engineers, researchers, and educators, commonly create, save, and export files in Mathcad when they need to document solutions or perform advanced computations.
NOTE: While XMCD was widely used, it has become deprecated since PTC introduced .MCDX files, a newer file format for Mathcad Prime. However, Mathcad still supports XMCD files, ensuring legacy projects remain accessible and usable in modern versions of the application.
How to open an XMCD file
You can open XMCD files with PTC Mathcad. However, it has been discontinued. If you have an old version of Mathcad, you can open them by selecting File → Open. Mathcad Prime, which replaced Mathcad, does not support XMCD files. SMath Studio also supports XMCD files.
