What is a XEXP file?

A XEXP file is a patch for a Microsoft Xbox 360 application (.XEX file). It is used to fix a bug in the application. XEXP files use the same filename as the XEX file they are meant to patch (except that they use the .xexp extension instead of the .xex extension).

More Information

Xbox Live users can download Title Updates for their Xbox 360 games and other apps. These updates are intended to fix issues and errors with the games and apps. Xbox Live delivers Title Updates in the form of XEXP files. A user's Xbox 360 automatically applies any downloaded XEXP files before opening the corresponding app.

Gamers who are modifying an app's XEX file may want to manually apply the patch a XEXP file contains to that app. For example, modders who use XeXTool to modify XEX files can also use XeXTool to apply the patch a XEXP file contains.

How to open a XEXP file

You can use XeXTool (Windows) to apply the patch a XEXP file contains to an associated XEX file. To do so, enter the following command after having decrypted and decompressed the XEX file:

xextool -p FileName.xexp FileName.xex
