What is an X3G file?

An X3G file is a 3D printer file used by desktop 3D printers with MakerBot or Sailfish firmwares, such as MakerBot Replicator, FlashForge, and Wanhao printers. It contains 3D model printing instructions. X3G files can be created by MakerBot 3D printing software and FlashForge FlashPrint.

More Information

The X3G format is designed to deliver instructions from a 3D model file, such as a .STL or .OBJ file, to a 3D printer in order to print the model. X3G files are primarily used by MakerBot Replicator and can be sent to the printer via an SD card or connected USB cable.

NOTE: X3G files replaced .S3G files with the release of MakerBot Replicator 2, and were themselves replaced by .MAKERBOT files.

How to open an X3G file

To print the 3D model an X3G file describes, open your MakerBot, FlashForge, or Wanhao 3D printer's printing software and follow the software's typical "print from file" workflow. For example, in MakerBot Desktop, you can print an X3G file by selecting File → Print from File from the program's menu bar and then selecting your X3G file.
