What is a WP2 file?
A WP2 file is an image saved in the WebP 2 raster image format, the successor to the WebP format. The WebP 2 format supports both lossy and lossless compression and reduces file size roughly 30% more than the WebP standard. WP2 files also support animations and include an alpha channel for transparency.
Google began developing the WebP 2 format in June 2021 to replace the WebP format, which Google released in 2010. Google initially released WebP as an open format to improve upon the JPEG, PNG, and GIF formats. Images you will most likely see saved in the WebP 2 format are digital photos and web graphics.
Images saved in the WebP format are saved with the .webp file extension (.WEBP files), whereas images saved in the WebP 2 format are saved with the .wp2 file extension (WP2 files).
NOTE: WebP 2 is pronounced: "weppy two."
How to open a WP2 file
Google has not yet released the WebP 2 format, so support for WP2 files is limited. However, you can encode and decode WP2 images with the WebP 2 Codec Package. The cwp2 tool encodes WebP 2 images and the dwp2 tool decodes WebP 2 images.
