What is a WIC file?

A WIC file is a raster image saved in the Java Wavelet Image Codec (JWIC) format. It was created by Sasha Chukov's JWICTranslator, a utility designed to save images with higher quality and smaller file sizes than .JPEG files.

More Information

JWICTranslator is designed to run on BeOS, a discontinued operating system developed by Be Inc. As such, you cannot run JWICTranslator in Windows, macOS, and other modern operating systems. However, you can still open WIC files with XnViewMP, a free image viewer available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

How to open a WIC file

You can open a WIC file with XnViewMP. To do so, select File → Open... from XnViewMP's menu bar. Then, navigate to and open your WIC file.

How to convert a WIC file

You can use XnViewMP to convert WIC files to the following image formats (and many others):

  • .JPG - JPEG Image
  • .BMP - Bitmap Image
  • .PNG - Portable Network Graphic
  • .TIFF - Tagged Image File Format
  • .GIF - Graphical Interchange Format
