What is a VRM file?
A VRM file is a 3D virtual avatar. It contains a humanoid 3D model that can be loaded and used to represent a user in various VR programs. VRM files are saved in a format specified by the VRM Consortium.
The VRM Consortium is a group of VR-minded organizations that have joined together to create a standardized format for 3D avatars. This format, known as VRM, provides specifications users can use to create humanoid character avatars.
Typically, users use Unity and the UniVRM Unity asset package to create VRM files. Users can also use VRoid Studio to create VRM files. Then, they can load the VRM file in various VR programs that support the VRM avatar standard. For example, you can load a VRM file in VSeeFace, an avatar puppeteering program, to use the avatar it contains in an animated YouTube video.
How to open a VRM file
You can open a VRM file in VR programs that support the VRM 3D avatar standard. Some examples include Unity with the UniVRM Unity asset package installed, VSeeFace, VDRAW, and FaceVTuber. You can find a complete list of programs that support the VRM standard at this link.
