What is a VBM file?

Backup file created by Veeam's virtual machine backup and recovery software; contains metadata describing a backup that was performed and stored in a .VBK full backup file (and also in .VRB incremental backup files).

More Information

VBM files may be included with VBK and VRB backup files. While they are not necessary to restore a backup, they provide much faster performance during the backup because they store cached information that the software can use rather than rediscover in the backup files. For this reason, if you have both a VBK and a VBM file, you should choose the VBM file when performing a restore.

A VBM file may also be a movie created using VBA-ReRecording, a Gameboy Advance emulator for PCs. It contains gameplay footage captured using VBA-ReRecording's movie recording tools. VBM files are used only by VBA-ReRecording, and not other Gameboy Advance emulators or media players.

More Information

VBA-ReRecording is a specialized variant of VisualBoyAdvance that video game speedrunners can use to set up and record tool-assisted speedruns (TASes). When speedrunners record a video in VBA-ReRecording, that video is saved as a VBM file.

After recording their speedruns, gamers can play their VBM movies in VBA-ReRecording to check their speedrun for errors. They can also convert their VBM movies into .AVI and .WAV movies, in order to share them with other gamers or upload them to the Internet.

How to open a VBM file

You can open a VBM file in VBA-ReRecording. To do so, open the program and select Tools → Movie → Play Movie.... When the Play Movie window appears, select Browse to find and play your VBM file.
