What is a UASSET file?
A UASSET file is an asset file used by Unreal Editor, a video game level editor included with Unreal Engine. It contains an asset, such as a level, material, animation, sound, or particle system, used in an Unreal Engine game. Some examples of Unreal Engine games include the Mass Effect series, Fortnite Battle Royale, and Unreal Tournament.
UASSET files can contain:
- Game levels
- Particle systems
- Blueprint scripts
- Cinematic sequences
- Static meshes
- Skeletal meshes
- Light profiles
- Audio tracks
Typically, users create artistic assets outside Unreal Editor, using tools such as Maya, 3ds Max, or Photoshop. They then import those assets into Unreal Editor using the program’s Content Browser, which converts the assets into UASSET files.
How do I open a UASSET file?
The Unreal Editor Content Browser includes an Asset Tree, which lists folders containing UASSET files. Using the Content Browser and Asset Tree, you can import, view, create, save, and delete assets.
To add a UASSET file to the Asset Tree, so you can view the asset it contains in Unreal Editor:
- In Unreal Editor, open the Content Browser ( ).
- Within the Asset Tree, select the folder in which you want to add your UASSET file. For example, if you are adding an audio file, you’d likely select the Sounds folder.
- Drag the UASSET file into the selected folder. After you do, the asset should appear in the Content Browser.
