What is an R2U file?

A file with the .r2u extension has been maliciously encrypted by R2U ransomware. It contains an image, document, video, or other file the ransomware is holding hostage. Because the file is encrypted, you cannot open it.

More Information

Ransomware is a form of malware that renames and encrypts a user's files so they cannot open them. After encrypting a user's files, ransomware programs produce a ransom note that instructs users on how they can (supposedly) pay a ransom to restore their files.

R2U ransomware encrypts a user's files and renames them to use the .r2u extension, producing filenames that end in extensions like .jpg.r2u. It then produces a ransom note named readme.txt.

How did my computer become infected by R2U ransomware?

Ransomware is most commonly distributed in email attachments and programs that appear to be legitimate but are actually adware and malware bundles. If you recently downloaded and opened an unverified attachment or program, that may be how your computer became infected by R2U ransomware.

How to open an R2U file

At this time, there is no way to decrypt and open R2U files. The best way to restore encrypted files is to retrieve them from a recent backup or perform a System Restore.

Warning

FileInfo.com recommends you never pay a ransom to decrypt files encrypted by ransomware. Paying a ransom encourages ransomware distributors to continue their efforts, and there is no guarantee that paying a ransom will give you access to your files. Instead, you should restore your data from a recent backup created before the ransomware infected your computer.
