What is a PK8 file?
A PK8 file contains a Pokémon caught in Pokémon Sword, Pokémon Shield, or another 8th generation Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch. It specifies the Pokémon's species, experience, stats, attacks, owner, and other data. Pokémon hackers use PK8 files to copy, modify, and transfer Pokémon between 8th generation Pokémon games.
More Information
Each Pokémon you capture in an 8th generation Pokémon game is saved in a separate PK8 file. These PK8 files are stored in your saved game file.
While most players will never encounter a PK8 file, those who have hacked their game can create, modify, and import PK8 files into saved games using the player-created PKHeX utility.
Common PK8 Filenames
[Pokémon name].pk8 - Each PK8 file is named for the Pokémon it contains.
How to open a PK8 file
You can open and edit PK8 files in PKHeX (Windows). In PKHeX you can edit the stats, attacks, and other data of the Pokémon a PK8 file contains. You can then import the PK8 file into Pokémon Sword, Pokémon Shield, or another 8th generation Pokémon game, by adding the file to your saved game file and importing that file onto a hacked Nintendo Switch using a game save injection tool.
