Developer Ilia Muraviev released PIM in 2004. PIM's proprietary compression format, which is referred to as both PIM and PIMPLE, is optimized for compressing multimedia files.

To create a PIM archive, users first select File → New... to create the archive. Then, they select Commands → Add File(s)... or Commands → Add Folder... to add files or folders to the archive. After a user has added files to a PIM archive, they cannot add more files to that archive.
