What is an MSOR file?
An MSOR file is a multi-wavelength trace file that stores optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) trace measurements for multiple wavelengths captured from an OTDR. For example, an instrument may record measurements at 1310 nm and 1550 nm and save both traces together in one MSOR file rather than creating a separate .SOR file for each wavelength. MSOR files are typically created during fiber-optic testing and are used by telecommunications technicians, fiber installers, network engineers, and other professionals who inspect and troubleshoot optical-fiber networks.
More Information
OTDR instruments test fiber-optic cables by sending pulses of light through a fiber and measuring the light that reflects back. The resulting trace helps technicians identify the fiber's length, signal loss, reflections, splices, connectors, and other events along the cable.
This allows fiber technicians and network engineers to review measurements from multiple wavelengths as part of the same test. The format is used by OTDR equipment and software from manufacturers such as VIAVI and EXFO.
How to open an MSOR file
You can open MSOR files with compatible OTDR software, including VIAVI or EXFO software. Current browser-based tools such as OTDR Master can also open MSOR files and display the individual traces without requiring the original instrument software. Keep in mind that MSOR is a vendor-specific format, so compatibility can vary between programs and equipment.
