What is an MSCZ_SAVING file?
An MSCZ_SAVING file is a temporary file MuseScore creates while saving a score that replaces an .MSCZ file to prevent data loss due to an app crash. It contains information about the new music score including notes, instruments, time and key signatures, and metadata. Once MuseScore completes the save process, the app removes the _saving extension from .mscz_saving, replacing the MSCZ file.
More Information
MuseScore is a free program used to compose and notate musical compositions. The standard format for saving scores in MuseScore is the MSCZ format.
When you modify and save a score saved as an MSCZ file, MuseScore creates an MSCZ_SAVING file as it writes the data to the new file. Once complete, MuseScore replaces the old MSCZ file with the MSCZ_SAVING file by removing the _saving extension. This method of saving protects against the loss of the old and new score in the event of a crash while saving (only the new score written to the MSCZ_SAVING file is lost).
How to open an MSCZ_SAVING file
MSCZ_SAVING files are not meant to be opened. Instead, MuseScore automatically creates the MSCZ_SAVING file while saving a score and replaces the associated MSCZ file, which you can then open with MuseScore.
If MuseScore does not automatically remove the _saving extension from .mscz_saving and the MSCZ_SAVING file remains, you may still be able to open it with the app. To do so, manually remove the _saving extension from .mscz_saving and attempt to open it as a normal MSCZ file.
