What is a KMP file?
A KMP file is a course description file used by Mario Kart Wii, a racing game developed by Nintendo for the Wii console. It contains structured data that defines how a race track functions in the game, helping control player positions, object behavior, and in-game events. Each KMP file works in conjunction with the track's visual and collision data to create a complete, playable course.
More Information
Nintendo originally created KMP files for use in the official Mario Kart Wii tracks; however, fans and modders also utilize them when designing custom courses. The KMP format is divided into multiple sections, with each section describing a specific aspect of the course.
The sections include racer start points, checkpoints, camera placements, respawn locations, and object positions such as item boxes or obstacles. Together, these elements determine how the game engine interprets the layout and interactive features of the track during gameplay.

A KMP file may also be a keymap file used by Korg synthesizers like the Triton, Trinity, M3, and Kronos workstations. It contains "multisample" data, which includes references to Sample files (.KSF) that store the actual sound waveforms and a map that assigns those sounds to specific keys on the keyboard. KMP files don't contain any audio themselves; they instead point to where the audio files are stored.
More Information
A Korg multisample is a collection of different sound samples, each representing a specific tone of an instrument. For example, if a user records the notes D4, C4, H4, and C5 from a piano, each of those notes becomes a sample, and together they form a multisample, which KMP files contain information about. The KMP file also includes settings that define how these samples are used, helping the synthesizer produce a realistic instrument sound.
How to open a KMP file
You can open KMP files with various Windows programs, such as FMJ-Software Awave Studio, WAVE Xtractor, and KORG PA Manager.
