A JAS file may also be a raster image created by Jasc Paint Shop Pro, a graphics editing program later acquired by Corel. It stores image data in the proprietary Jasc Image (JAS) format, which supports 24-bit color (the image can contain millions of colors) or 8-bit grayscale (the image can contain various shades of gray). JAS files are also compressed to reduce their size.

More Information

Jasc Software released the first version of Paint Shop Pro in 1990, initially developing it to be a simple image editing tool for the Windows platform. However, it became a more advanced graphics editor with various features, including support for layers, advanced color editing, and various image effects. When creating or editing images in Paint Shop Pro, users often saved their work in the JAS format to reduce the file size and preserve the image, making the format helpful for users who wanted to manage space efficiently while still keeping their images high quality.

After Corel acquired Jasc Software in 2004, they integrated Paint Shop Pro into their product lineup (eventually renaming it to PaintShop Pro). Over the years, Corel phased out the JAS format in favor of more standardized image formats, such as .JPEG, .PNG, and .TIFF.
