A DOL file may also be a 3D model used in the PlayStation 2 version of Half-Life. It contains polygons, textures, and texture mapping information used to show a character or item in-game. DOL files are similar to the .MDL files used by other versions of Half-Life.

More Information

Valve Half-Life is a first-person shooter video game in which players play as Gordon Freeman, a scientist who must fight off aliens while escaping a research facility. The game is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and PlayStation 2 (PS2).

The PS2 version of Half-Life uses different assets than the PC versions. For example, while the PC versions of Half-Life use 3D models saved as MDL files, the PS2 version uses 3D models saved as DOL files. While these files are formatted similarly, there are minor differences between the DOL and MDL formats. Therefore, Half-Life modding apps that can open MDL files may not be able to open DOL files.

How to convert a DOL file

You can use the MDLTOOL included in the PS2 HL TOOLS toolkit to convert DOL files to the .MDL (Half-Life Model) format. Then, you can open the converted files with MDL model viewers and editors.
