What is a BACKUP.METADATA file?

A BACKUP.METADATA file is a metadata file produced by Seedvault, a backup application for Android. It is paired with an accompanying Seedvault backup and used to restore the data that backup contains to an Android device.

More Information

Seedvault is a third-party app that Android users can use to back up data stored on their devices. Typically, Seedvault uploads backups and their accompanying BACKUP.METADATA files to the Nextcloud cloud storage service.

When a user restores a Seedvault backup, the app uses the BACKUP.METADATA file to restore files to the correct locations. If a backup does not contain a valid BACKUP.METADATA file, Seedvault cannot restore the files that backup contains.

How to open a BACKUP.METADATA file

BACKUP.METADATA files are not meant to be opened or edited. Seedvault (Android) uses BACKUP.METADATA files to restore associated Android data backups.
