What is an AWT file?
An AWT file is a document template created by AbiSource AbiWord, a free word processor. It contains preset page layout and style settings for a document that allows users to author multiple .ABW documents with the same formatting. AbiWord users often save letters, memos, reports, and other documents they want to replicate as AWT files.
More Information
AbiWord is an open-source word processor developed by the AbiSource community. It includes many standard features and support for various document formats, including .DOCX and .ODT. While older versions of the application are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, AbiSource only actively develops the software for Linux since version 3.
How to create an AWT file
AWT is the default format for saving templates with AbiWord. To create an AWT file with AbiWord:
- Open a document in AbiWord.
- Select File → Save As.
- Choose "AbiWord Template" from the "Save as type" dropdown menu.
- Name the file and click Save.
How to open an AWT file
You can open AWT files with AbiSource AbiWord (multiplatform). To open an AWT file, select File → Open... or select File → New using Template.
You can also open an AWT file with XML, source code, and plain text editors since the AWT format is based on the XML standard. However, opening an AWT file with one of these programs will not display the document like AbiWord. Therefore, you may only want to open an AWT file with an XML, source code, or plain text editor if you cannot access AbiWord and need to recover the text from the document.
