What is a AUP3-SHM file?
An AUP3-SHM file is a temporary project file created by Audacity, a free audio recording and editing program. It is linked to a corresponding .AUP3 file. You should not delete or move an AUP3-SHM file, as doing so will destroy the corresponding AUP3 file.
In version 3, Audacity began saving users' audio editing projects as AUP3 files. AUP3 files are database files that store a project's included audio files, project settings, and metadata.
When a user creates or opens an AUP3 file, the Windows and Linux versions of Audacity create a corresponding AUP3-SHM file. This file is a temporary file that Audacity uses to store and write data to the user's AUP3 file. Audacity automatically deletes related AUP3-SHM files when a user closes an AUP3 file. The Mac version of Audacity does not create AUP3-SHM files.
NOTE: Audacity also creates .AUP3-WAL temporary files.
How to open a AUP3-SHM file
AUP3-SHM files are not meant to be opened. Audacity will automatically delete related AUP3-SHM files when you close a project or exit the program.
