What is an AP21 file?
An AP21 file is a project archive created by Siemens TIA Portal (version 21), an engineering platform for developing and managing industrial automation systems. It stores an entire project, including the information needed to configure, program, and deploy automation hardware, serving as a backup package. The format makes it easier to preserve and transport automation projects by consolidating project data into a single archive.
More Information
Engineers and technicians use AP21 files at various stages of the design, deployment, and maintenance of industrial automation systems. For example, an automation engineer may create an AP21 archive before updating the control logic for a factory packaging line. The engineer can transfer the archive to another engineering workstation for testing or provide it to a maintenance team so they can restore or modify the system later if needed.
Since an AP21 file preserves a project's state at a specific point in time, it can also support version tracking, backup procedures, and project recovery. Depending on the project contents, the archive may store programmable logic controller (PLC) programs, human-machine interface (HMI) configurations, device settings, industrial communication parameters, drive configurations, and other automation components supported by the software.
NOTE: TIA stands for "Totally Integrated Automation."
