HEIF is an international standard developed through the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and standardized as ISO/IEC 23008-12. HEICS is part of the HEIF family and can store information about the images in a sequence, including frame timing and how many times the sequence should repeat.

Apple introduced HEIF support with iOS 11 and macOS 10.13, while the .heics extension is specifically associated with image sequences rather than the individual HEVC-encoded images commonly stored as .HEIC files. The company also provides image properties for HEICS sequences, including frame information, delay times, and loop count, which applications can use to control how the sequence is displayed. Developers and other users working with image-sequence technologies may encounter HEICS files, although the .heics extension is much less common than .heic.

You can open HEICS files with the open-source libheif library, which supports HEIF image sequences and includes the heif-view utility for displaying them. Developers can also use the ImageEn library to add HEIF and image-sequence support to their own applications. However, support for HEICS sequences is less common than support for standard HEIC images, so many general-purpose image viewers may not recognize the file type.

Apple's Image I/O framework gives applications built-in tools for reading and displaying HEICS image sequences. For example, an application can use the framework to determine how long each image should be displayed and how many times the sequence should repeat. Most users do not interact with Image I/O directly; instead, an application can use Apple's framework behind the scenes to work with HEICS files.
