What is an SNR file?
An SNR file is an audio file used by an Electronic Arts (EA) video game. It contains a sound effect played in the game. Notable games that use SNR files include The Sims 3, BattleForge, and Monopoly (2008).
More Information
Many EA video games released between 2005 and 2010 include SNR files. The games use these files to play in-game sound effects. Games that include SNR files also commonly include .SNS files (which may contain sound effects or music). Like SNS files, SNR files are typically encoded using EA's XAS or Layer3 audio codecs.
While SNR files are not meant to be opened by players, game modders have created tools that allow them to play the sounds that SNR files contain. Modders have also created tools that allow them to convert .WAV files to the SNR format, such as wav_to_snr and EALayer3.
How to open an SNR file
You can use vgmstream to play the sound an SNR file contains. A desktop version of vgmstream is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and an online version is available at this link.
