An RPA file may also be a compressed archive created by the Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine. It contains a collection of assets used in a visual novel. RPA files are packaged within the .ZIP and .TAR.BZ2 files used to distribute a visual novel.

More Information

Ren'Py is a game engine used to create visual novels, which are interactive stories that can be played on computers and mobile devices. After a creator finalizes their visual novel, they must package it for distribution. As part of the packaging process, Ren'Py often bundles game assets, such as images and game scripts, into one or more RPA archives.

Bundling game assets in this way reduces their file size. It also prevents malicious players or developers from easily copying or tampering with a game's assets.

How to open an RPA file

A variety of tools allow users to extract files from RPA archives. For example, RPA Extract (Windows), rpatool (cross-platform), and unrpa (cross-platform) are all simple tools that allow users to decompress and view the contents of RPA archives.
