What is an RKG file?
An RKG file is a time trial ghost used in Mario Kart Wii, a racing game for the Nintendo Wii. It contains data used to show a ghost racer that a player must beat during a timed race. RKG files specify a ghost's kart, character, drift type, and course route, which is saved as a series of controller inputs that Mario Kart Wii recreates.
More Information
Mario Kart Wii's Time Trial mode allows players to race against developer- and player-created ghosts, in order to beat those ghosts' course times and win rewards. Each ghost's data is saved in an RKG file.
In addition to the data used to show a ghost during a race, RKG files contain metadata that specifies a ghost's course and lap times. In rare scenarios, Mario Kart Wii ghosts may be affected by objects that were not present during their creation, causing the ghost to desynchronize from its RKG file and veer wildly off course. This scenario is known as the Wiggler Glitch.
How to open an RKG file
Most players will not interact with Mario Kart Wii's RKG files, but those who do can open and view the files' contents in RKG Viewer (Windows). Players can also use Riivolution to install other players' RKG files on their Nintendo Wiis. Note that, in order to use Riivolution, you must have already installed the Homebrew Channel.
