What is a PTE file?

A PTE file is a texture used by Star Stable Online, an online adventure game in which players ride, race, and care for horses. It contains an image used to skin a 3D character or object, so it appears with the correct colors and textures. Most PTE files are encrypted.

More Information

In Star Stable Online, players adventure through the land of Jorvik accompanied by other players and horses. The game renders player characters, horses, NPCs, and other in-game objects using 3D models and textures applied to those 3D models. The textures give the 3D models the correct colors and appearance.

Some of the textures Star Stable Online uses are saved as PTE, or Pixel Texture, files. These files are saved in a format similar to the Crunch CRN format, except they contain a modified header.

How to open a PTE file

You can open a PTE file with Crunch (Windows). Before doing so, you must either manually delete the file's custom header and change its extension to .crn or use the Star Stable Online PTE/TGA .BMS script (linked below) to convert the file using QuickBMS. Opening a CRN file with Crunch will produce a .DDS file, which contains a converted version of the original image's contents.

A PTE file may also be a proprietary data file used by various games developed with the Pixel Tales engine, including the Star Stable Online game created by Star Stable Entertainment. It stores structured game data that the engine reads during gameplay. Depending on the specific version of the engine, it may define materials, rendering properties, or other asset-related information.

More Information

PTE files are saved in a binary format designed for efficient loading and performance. The game engine reads these files at runtime and applies its data to related assets, such as 3D models or visual effects.

Developers include PTE files as part of the game’s packaged resources, often storing them inside larger .CSA archive files, along with other proprietary asset formats, such as .PME and .PMT files. Players typically do not interact with these files directly because the engine manages them internally.

How to open a PTE file

PMT files are not meant to be opened. Games using the Pixel Tales engine, such as Star Stable Online, automatically load the PMT file when running.
