What is an ICBU file?
An ICBU file is a calendar backup created by Apple Calendar, a calendar application bundled with macOS. It contains a backup of one or more calendars that users create to archive and restore if calendar data is lost.
More Information
You can export a calendar to an ICBU archive by selecting File → Export... → Calendar Archive... in Calendar. The ICBU archive is a macOS package with the .icbu extension, containing subfolders for each calendar and .SQLITEDB and .PLIST files storing event data. In older versions of Apple Calendar, the archive contains .ICS files instead of SQLite databases.
NOTE: Calendar was formerly known as iCal, but Apple changed it in 2012 with the release of OS X Mountain Lion.
How to open an ICBU file
You can open ICBU files with Apple Calendar in macOS. To open an ICBU file with Calendar, select File → Import.
When restoring backups, Calendar overwrites all existing calendar data. The program prompts the user to overwrite the data before performing the operation.
How to convert an ICBU file
Apple Calendar can convert ICBU files to .ICS files. To do so, open an ICBU file with Calendar and then select File → Export → Export.
