What is a DINO file?

A DINO file is a drawing created by Dinopixel, an online pixel art maker. It contains information about the drawing, such as the canvas dimensions, pencil strokes, and colors, in the Dinopixel (DINO) format. Users save drawings as DINO files to preserve their progress (downloading them to their computer), then upload them back into the Dinopixel program in the web browser to continue editing them.

A DINO file may also be a project created by DinosaurMod, a web-based block programming environment based on Scratch, TurboWarp, and PenguinMod. It stores a programming project, including sprites, scripts, costumes, sounds, variables, and project settings used to create interactive games, animations, simulations, and other multimedia applications. DINO files save all of a project's assets, which typically include .JSON and .SVG files in a single, Zip-compressed file, allowing users to continue editing their work or share it with others.

DinosaurMod uses DINO files as its primary project format. Students, educators, hobbyists, and programmers create these files when developing projects with DinosaurMod's visual, block-based programming interface. The format is designed to preserve the complete state of a project, making it easy to move projects between computers, archive them, or collaborate with other DinosaurMod users.

Since DINO files are projects, they are intended for editing rather than for execution on their own. Users typically create them while developing a project and then run or publish the finished work from within DinosaurMod.

NOTE: To create a DINO file, select File → Save as.

How to open a DINO file

You can open a DINO file with DinosaurMod in a web browser. To open the DINO file, select File → Load from your computer. After opening the file, you can edit the project's blocks, sprites, costumes, sounds, and other assets, then save the updated project back to a DINO file.

Since DINO files are Zip-compressed, you can rename the .dino file extension to .zip and extract the contents with a Zip utility, such as Microsoft File Explorer, Apple Archive Utility, or Corel WinZip.
