What is an XFS file?
An XFS file is a game resource package used by various video games developed by Rage Software, including the eRacer and Rage Rally car racing games. It may contain sound effects (e.g., engine noises or collision sounds) or a music track (e.g., background music for a playable racetrack) played during gameplay. XFS files may also store models for objects in a game, such as rally cars in the Rage Rally game.
More Information
Rage Software used the XFS format in various games during the late 1990s and early 2000s until the company went defunct. While games no longer use the format, you may still encounter it in the installation directory of old Rage Software games like eRacer and Rage Rally.
For example, you can find XFS files in the "Cars" and "Tracks" folders in the following directory for the eRacer installation:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Rage Software\eRacer
NOTE: Rage Software was formerly Rage Games.
How to open an XFS file
You should not attempt to open XFS files since games automatically load them for gameplay. However, if you are looking to modify the files, you can extract their contents with the E-racer script.
