What is an XC file?
An XC file is a game data archive used by a Nintendo 3DS video game developed by Level-5. It may contain 3D models, textures, animations, and other types of game data. Level-5 game modders have created utilities that allow them to extract the game data that XC files contain.
More Information
Level-5 is a Japanese video game developer that has published several popular titles and series, including many for the Nintendo 3DS. Many of Level-5's 3DS games store various assets in XC files. For example, the 3DS versions of the following Level-5 games contain XC files:
- Time Travelers
- Yo-kai Watch (and its sequels)
- Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
While most players will never encounter an XC file, Level-5 game modders can use various utilities to extract, modify, and replace the assets it contains.
NOTE: Level-5 3DS games re-released on other platforms (such as the Nintendo Switch and Android versions of Yo-kai Watch) also use XC files.
How to open an XC file
You can open XC files with 3ds-xfsatool in Windows to unpack them and extract their assets. You can also use Kurrimu2 (multiplatform) to view and edit XC files' contents.
If your XC file contains a 3D model, you can use Blender with the Studio Eleven add-on or Metanoia to view that model (Metanoia cannot open XC files that contain other types of game data).
