What is a VERSION file?
A VERSION file is a metadata file used to identify the name and hosted location of a Kerbal Space Program (KSP) mod. It lists a mod's name, location, version, and associated KSP version(s) in a JSON format. Some KSP mod managers, such as KSP-AVC, use VERSION files to retrieve, install, and update associated mods.
More Information
Squad Kerbal Space Program is a popular rocket construction and space flight simulation game. The KSP community has created many mods for the game, which allow players to alter the game's gameplay.
Some KSP mods are compatible with only certain versions of the game. To help players manage their mods and KSP installations, KSP Add-on Version Checker (KSP-AVC) uses VERSION files to check that a mod is compatible with a player's version of KSP. KSP-AVC and other mod managers can also use VERSION files to retrieve, install, and update mods from the download locations listed in the files.
How to open a VERSION file
You can open a VERSION file and view the data it contains in Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (Mac), or any other text editor.
