What is a USM file?
A USM file is a video file included in a console video game. It contains a cutscene played during gameplay. Most notably, Persona 4 and Persona 5 include USM cutscenes.
More Information
USM videos are similar to Bink videos (.BIK files). While most gamers are unlikely to encounter a USM file, video game enthusiasts and modders may encounter USM files while examining a game's assets. Some gamers have created tools, like Scaleform VideoEncoder, that allow players to create their own USM videos and convert USM videos to more-common video formats.
How to open a USM file
You can use VGMToolbox (Windows) to convert a USM video to an .M2V video file and .ADX audio file, which can be played separately in VideoLAN VLC media player. If you want to combine these files into a single video file, you must:
- Use the ChipAmp plug-in for the Winamp media player to convert your ADX file to a .WAV file.
- Use FFMpeg to combine your M2V and WAV files into a single .MKV video.
