NOTE: A RAS file that contains music (may appear as x_music.ras) can be opened by Audacity. To do this, select File → Import → Raw Data... and choose the RAS file.

An RAS file is a raster graphic created on a SunOS workstation. It contains raw or compressed image data, saved with an image depth of 1, 4, 8, 24, or 32 bits. RAS files may contain grayscale, paletted, or full-color images.

Sun Microsystems, which was established in 1982 and acquired by Oracle in 2010, sold workstations and servers that used the Unix-based SunOS operating system. These systems save images in Sun's proprietary Sun Raster Graphic format.
Primarily, Sun Raster Graphics are saved as .SUN or RAS files. Sometimes, the files are instead saved as .RS or .SR files. You can identify a Sun Raster Graphic by using a hex editor to examine the file's header, which always contains the identifying magic number 59a66a95.
