What is a PAPER file?
A PAPER file is a document created by Dropbox Paper, an online tool available to Dropbox users that provides collaborative document editing. It stores various document elements, including formatted text, tables, charts, interactive forms, and imported media, such as images, videos, and songs.
More Information
Dropbox launched the Paper service in 2017 as an online workspace for teams to create, review, revise, organize, and present ideas. Paper stores each document you create in separate PAPER files that organize all of the elements you add to the document.
While you can share links to your documents for others to access, you cannot download PAPER files from the online workspace since Paper only uses them internally. However, you can share a link to download a .URL shortcut to the PAPER file, which the recipient can double-click to open in the Paper workspace. The file will appear with an underscore preceding the document name followed by the .paper.url extension (e.g., _document.paper.url).
How to open a PAPER file
You can only open PAPER files with Dropbox Paper in a web browser or the Dropbox Paper (Android) and Paper by Dropbox (iOS) mobile apps. Since Paper only uses PAPER files internally, you will only encounter them when using Dropbox.
All PAPER documents are accessible from the Paper Home screen, and you can click them to open them. You may also find them in your Dropbox folder if you have the Dropbox desktop app installed, but when you double-click the PAPER files, they will open in the Paper workspace in your web browser.
How to convert a PAPER file
Dropbox Paper can convert PAPER files to several file types, including the following formats:
You can convert PAPER files by clicking the menu (three horizontal dots) in the upper-right corner of the workspace and then selecting Export.
