What is a MIX file?

A MIX file is a game data file used by the Command & Conquer (C&C) real-time strategy games. It may contain game scenarios, movies, music, and sounds. Examples of MIX files installed with C&C games include conquer.mix, local.mix, movies.mix, and music.mix.

More Information

Games that use MIX data files include:

  • Command and Conquer Red Alert
  • Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun
  • Command and Conquer Red Alert 2
  • Command and Conquer Renegade

Newer C&C games developed by Electronic Arts (and not Westwood Studios) store game data in .BIG files.

How to open a MIX file

You can open, edit, and manage Command & Conquer MIX files using XCC Utilities (Windows), which is a group of player-created utilities that allows Command & Conquer enthusiasts to play MIX audio and videos, open and edit MIX maps, and create their own MIX files.

A MIX file may also be a vector image created by PhotoDraw 2000, a drawing program included with Microsoft Office 2000. The MIX file format supports both vector and raster graphics. MIX files were used to store images that could be included in Microsoft Office documents.

More Information

MIX files were originally designed for use with Microsoft Picture It!, the predecessor to PhotoDraw 2000. Picture It! became part of the Microsoft Digital Image Suite, which was discontinued in 2006. However, many of the suite's features were included in the Windows Vista operating system.

NOTE: PhotoDraw 2000 was discontinued after version 2.

How to open a MIX file

While Microsoft Picture It! and PhotoDraw 2000 are discontinued, you can open MIX images in XnSoft XnViewMP, a cross-platform image viewing and editing application. You can then convert your MIX image to a more common image format, such as .JPG or .PNG, to use it with other programs.
