What is an IDMS file?
An IDMS file contains a snippet created by InDesign, a desktop publishing program used to create professional page layouts. It stores a subset of a document, which includes one or more objects and their relative placement to each other. IDMS files are created to export and reuse portions of a page.
More Information
You can create an IDMS file by selecting one or more objects in a document, such as an .INDD or .INDT file, and dragging and dropping them to the desktop. You can also export a snippet with InDesign by selecting File → Export... and choosing "InDesign Snippet" from the "Format" dropdown list.
NOTE: Previous versions of InDesign saved snippets as .INDS files. However, Adobe replaced INDS files with IDMS when it released InDesign CS4.
How to open an IDMS file
You can open IDMS files with Adobe InDesign (Windows and macOS) by selecting File → Place.... You can also drag and drop the IDMS file into an open InDesign document to place the snippet in the document.
