An HPK file may also be a compressed archive created by HPACK, an archiving utility available primarily for MS-DOS. It contains one or more compressed files. Some HPK files may be encrypted.
More Information
Developer Peter Gutmann created HPACK in the early 1990s. His intention was to create an archive utility with strong support for public key and symmetric key encryption. While Gutmann originally created HPACK for use in MS-DOS, it was ported to other operating systems, including OS/2 and AmigaOS.
HPACK allows users to compress files in encrypted or unencrypted archives. These archives use the .hpk extension. If a user chooses to encrypt an archive, they enter up to two passwords as they create it. Only users who know the password(s) can then open that archive.
NOTE: Peter Gutmann's HPACK compression utility has nothing to do with HPACK HTTP/2 header compression, which web developers use to compress HTTP headers.
How to open an HPK file
Only HPACK can open HPK files. HPACK is available in source code and MS-DOS executable versions. To use the MS-DOS executable, you'll likely have to run it in an MS-DOS emulator, such as DOSBox.
