What is a HOUSEHOLDBINARY file?
A HOUSEHOLDBINARY file is a game data file used by The Sims 4. It is one of a set of four or more files that comprise a Sims 4 household. HOUSEHOLDBINARY files are found in The Sims 4's Tray directory.
More Information
Each Sims 4 household is comprised of a:
- HOUSEHOLDBINARY file
- HHI file
- TRAYITEM file
- SGI file for each sim included in the household (a household of three sims uses three SGI files)
These files can be found in the game's Tray directory, which is located in the following places in Windows and macOS:
- Windows XP - C:/Documents and Settings/[username]/My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/
- Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10 - C:/Users/[username]/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/
- macOS - /Users/[username]/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/
Most players will never need to do anything with The Sims 4's HOUSEHOLDBINARY files. However, modders and players who are transferring a household from one instance of The Sims 4 to another may want to copy and/or move a household's files.
How to open a HOUSEHOLDBINARY file
HOUSEHOLDBINARY files are not meant to be opened. To use a HOUSEHOLDBINARY file with The Sims 4, place it in the game's Tray folder along with the file's accompanying .HHI, TRAYITEM, and SGI files. The content your files contain will then appear in-game.
